    Maintenance Worker - Water

    Job Description
    GENERAL SUMMARY  
    Performs manual labor. Performs related work as required. When assigned to Parks: maintains parks, maintains athletic fields, mows, trims, waters, maintains trees and landscaping, and other duties associated with parks, athletic complexes, and common areas of Wylie. When assigned to Streets: uses tools and equipment required to maintain, repair, and construct street, drainage, and alley systems. When assigned to Water or Waste Water: performs installation, maintenance and repair of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
     
    SUPERVISION
    Supervision is provided by the appropriate supervisor, based upon assigned department.
     
    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
    • Keeps work areas clean. Cleans, maintains, and services tools and equipment.
    • Loads and unloads materials and equipment.
    • Reads, understands, and follows written and oral job instructions, plans, maps, and drawings.
    • Submits written reports legibly and completely.
    • Creates reports using the Public Works software system.
    • Hears clearly when working around equipment and in traffic.
    • Uses proper safety precautions when performing all tasks. Exercises good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly. Operates vehicles according to rules of safety and laws of the State of Texas. Uses proper safety precautions at all times and wears proper safety equipment at all times. Follows safety regulations, City and department policies and procedures.
    • Presents a clean and well-groomed appearance.
    • Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
    • Able and willing to work outside in all kinds of weather.
    • Communicates effectively with co-workers.
    • Subject to after-hours call-out for emergency situations, as defined by supervisor.
    • Sets up barricades when and where needed for the safety of employees and the public.
    • Completes work orders, including turning in completed forms on a daily basis.
    • Performs as a responsible steward of the public trust and strives for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all.
    • Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co-workers and others.
    • Other duties as may be assigned. 
       
      When assigned to Parks:
    • Works effectively with other crew members to maintain parks.
    • Uses various types of parks equipment including mowers, trimmers, etc.
    • Picks up trash and maintains trash barrels around the City.
    • Reads and interprets simple maps and drawings.
    • Keeps hand tools in safe working condition.
    • Immediately reports any motorized equipment that is not working properly.
    • Must be available for evening and weekend overtime during athletic seasons.
     
    When assigned to Streets:
    • Participates in all phases of street, drainage and alley maintenance, repair and construction.
    • Uses hand saw, skill saw, chain saw, drill press, bolt cutter, pick axe, air compressor, jackhammer, cutting torch, and various weight hammers.
       
      When assigned to Water or Waste Water:
    • Works effectively with other crew members to repair or replace water or sewer service lines, water or sewer mains.
    • Makes water or waste water taps.
    • Installs and/or repairs fire hydrants.
    • Unstops sewer lines.
    • Installs clean-outs in sewer lines.
       
      MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
      High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid Class C Driver's License, without restrictions except “A”. Must have Texas Driver's License within 30 days of hire. Minimum of six months working in the same or similar type job. This position requires the completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses 100 and 700 upon hiring or within six months of employment/transfer/promotion.
       
      When assigned to Streets:
      Class “A” CDL or the ability to obtain within six months. Courses 800, 300 and 400 must be attained within the first year of employment.
       
      When assigned to Water:
      Ability to obtain Class “A” CDL within six months of employment. Must be able to obtain Water Distribution “C” license within two years. Certificates, Water Class B or C Distribution, Customer Service Inspections and Backflow Assembly Tester are all a plus, but are not required.
       
      KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
    • Work outside in all kinds of weather, including extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, etc.
    • Effectively interact with all levels of co-workers, management staff, citizens and the public
    • Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
    • Read and interpret instructions, written and verbal
    • Available for after-hours, emergency call-out
    • Work overtime as needed
    • Ability to follow departmental policy on attendance
    • Pass a pre-employment drug screening test, physical and criminal background check
       
    When assigned to Parks:
    Must have experience with tractors, mowers, and other turf maintenance equipment. Must have experience working with various types of equipment such as spades, shovels, saws, line trimmers, edgers, sod cutters, etc. Must have experience maintaining sports fields for baseball, soccer, and football.

    When assigned to Streets:
    Experience working with various types of equipment, i.e., pumps, generators, backhoes, dump trucks, jet trucks service trucks, wrenches, hand and power saws, jackhammers, hammers of various sizes and types, grinders, shovels, drain spades, drills and/or drill press.
     
    When assigned to Water:
    Experience working with various types of equipment and hand tools, i.e., pumps, generators, backhoes, dump trucks, jet trucks, service trucks, hand and power tools.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
    PHYSICAL STRENGTH REQUIRED:
    High to very high: Exerting 50 – 100+ pounds occasionally, 25 - 100 pounds frequently, or 10 - 50 pounds
    constantly. Lifts up to 100 pounds. Pushes, pulls or drags up to 150 pounds, with help. Works in all types of inclement weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.). Possible exposure to biological and/or infectious materials. Some exposure to mechanical, electrical and explosive hazards, dust, toxic and chemicals, and confined space work, using proper safety precautions.
